From “agent ID + OTP” to one-tap verified login

How a money-transfer & Business-Correspondent network with hundreds of retail agents can replace OTP logins with “Login with idpass” — without disrupting a single agent.

The setup

A national fintech runs a retailer portal. Hundreds of retail agents log in every day to process remittances and BC transactions. Today each agent signs in with an agent ID + an OTP sent to their registered mobile number.

😖 Problems with ID + OTP

  • OTPs get intercepted, phished, or lost to SIM-swaps
  • Agents share IDs/OTPs — no real proof of who logged in
  • No strong link between the login and a verified human
  • Fake / duplicate agent sign-ups slip through
  • SMS-OTP cost + support tickets for “didn’t get OTP”

✅ With “Login with idpass”

  • Login bound to the agent’s own phone + fingerprint — no OTP to steal
  • One verified human = one agent (blocks duplicates/bots)
  • Every login carries a government-verified identity
  • New agents onboard themselves with verified KYC in minutes
  • No SMS-OTP cost; the agent can remote-logout any session

Migration — step by step

  1. Sign up & get keys (~30 min, one-time)

Create an account at idpass.in, register the retailer portal as an app, and copy the client_id + secret.

  2. Add the button next to the existing OTP login (~1 day dev)

Drop in “Login with idpass” using the SDK, or your existing OpenID Connect library — see the integration guide. Keep OTP login live alongside it; nothing is removed yet.

  3. Link idpass to the existing agent account (the key step)

The agent logs in once the old way (ID + OTP), then taps “Secure my account with idpass” and signs in with idpass. Your backend stores the mapping agent_id ↔ idpass sub. From then on, an idpass login instantly resolves to that agent — no OTP. (You can also auto-match using the agent’s verified name / registered mobile already on file.)

  4. Agents enrol once in the idpass app (self-serve)

Agents install the idpass app and verify once (DigiLocker + face). This also gives you a fresh, government-verified KYC record for each agent — useful for compliance.

  5. Make idpass the primary login; keep OTP as fallback

Once most agents are linked, show idpass first. Keep OTP as a backstop for anyone mid-migration, then retire it when you’re ready.

What your backend receives on each login: a stable sub (unique to your portal), the agent’s verified name, and dob_verified / assurance level. You map sub → your agent_id once (step 3); after that, login is a single tap. The agent’s Aadhaar number is never shared with you.
